FAQs About Botox Injections And Preparation

How should you prepare for Botox injections? Botulinum toxin type A is a popular way to freshen the facial area and decrease the appearance of fine lines—with more than 4.4 million procedures performed in 2020, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. If you're ready to join the millions of botulinum toxin users, take a look at what you need to know to prepare.

Can You Drive Yourself to the Procedure?

Unlike invasive cosmetic procedures, botulinum toxin type A injections will not require anesthesia or sedation. This means you can drive yourself to and from the treatment. If you are nervous about your first injection or you feel more comfortable bringing a friend, spouse, significant other, or family member, you can choose to have someone else drive you to and from your appointment. While a designated driver isn't necessary, bringing along a support person can help you to feel a sense of calm and comfort before, during, and after the procedure.

Can You Take Medications Before the Injections?

The answer to this question depends on what medications you take. Some medications can interfere with the healing process or may cause bleeding/bruising (such as blood thinners). Never stop taking a prescription or doctor-recommended medication without consulting a medical provider. Your doctor can help you to understand which medications may interact with botulinum toxin or cause healing issues and which ones won't.

Along with prescription and over-the-counter medications, your doctor may ask you to stop taking some types of supplements (including vitamins) before your treatment. Even though supplements are natural, some may not mix well with this injectable or may interfere with your body's ability to effectively heal.

Can You Smoke Before Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections?

Like some types of medications, smoking can also slow down the healing process. If you are a smoker, talk to your dermatologist or medical provider about the effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products on this type of treatment. You may need to stop smoking for a day or two before your injections. This may decrease the risk of post-procedure bruising.

Can You Wear Makeup?

You should come to your appointment with clean skin. Wash your skin thoroughly with a mild cleanser. Avoid moisturizer or sunscreen products until after your treatment. Even though you should have clean skin before your injections, you don't need to scrub your face or exfoliate deeply. This can irritate the injection area.
